10 May 2011: The Pacific Island Forum Secretariat (PIFS) announced that additional finance is available from the EU’s 10th Development Fund (EDF10) to Pacific Island Countries (PICs) considered “good” performers.

According to PIFS, the EU is linking the commitment of funds under the National Indicative Programmes (NIPs) under EDF10, to the implementation of the EU Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Initiative, announced in September 2010 at the UN MDG Summit.

The EU recently announced that it will offer an additional EUR1 billion globally, to the most committed and also most needy countries, EUR300 million of which is reserved for 19 “good” performing countries. Nine of these countries are PICs.

The Cook Islands, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Tuvalu qualify and can submit top-up proposals of up to 10% of the value of their NIPs. [PIFS Press Release]
