About 540 participants attending the Fifth Roundtable Meeting on Sustainable Palm Oil, held from 20-22 November 2007 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, witnessed the launch of a certification scheme for the sustainable production of palm oil.

Development of the certification process, which is expected to produce certified palm oil in the first quarter of 2008, followed weeks of intense criticism by environmental groups that palm oil production is destroying natural habitats for wildlife and indigenous peoples, and contributing to global warming.
