May 2019: A new interactive, practice-oriented e-learning course covers the basics of sustainable finance, provides examples of UN-supported initiatives to promote sustainable finance in such countries as Mongolia and Indonesia, and shares insights gained during activities in emerging economies and interactions with market participants worldwide.

The course titled, ‘Introduction to Sustainable Finance,’ includes modules on: the fundamentals of sustainable finance, and its potential to help achieve the SDGs and the Paris Agreement on climate change; the sustainable finance market, and the functions, stakeholders and regulations that govern the market; and sustainable finance products, including green bonds and green loans. Course participants will also learn about environmental, social and governance-related risks, market trends and future challenges.

More specifically, the course aims to:

  • discuss and enhance understanding of current developments and trends in sustainable finance;
  • distinguish between different types of sustainable finance products and relevant eligibility criteria;
  • discuss opportunities, challenges and enabling conditions for countries to benefit from sustainable investment opportunities;
  • identify public and private sector opportunities to issue green bonds and green loans; and
  • apply sustainable finance mechanisms to a real-life investment case study.

The course is presented by the Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) and the Strategic Alliance on Green Bond Market Development in G20 Emerging Economies, a partnership between Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (SEB) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. It is available free-of-charge through the e-module of the One UN Climate Change Learning Partnership (UN CC:e-Learn), a joint initiative of more than 30 multilateral organizations helping countries to achieve climate change action through climate literacy and applied skills development. It provides advice and learning resources to help people, governments and businesses to understand, adapt and build resilience to climate change. [Course Website]
