OHCHR Calls for Universal, Participatory and Transparent SDG Review
story highlights

The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) released a briefing note on integrating human rights into the post-2015 development agenda, with a focus on accountability.

Follow-up and review of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the global level is recommended to take place under the High-Level Political Forum on sustainable development (HLPF) at least every five years, and to be harmonized with the Human Rights Council's Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process.

At the national level, the note recommends follow-up and review at least every two years.

At the regional level, it suggests that countries be supported to provide direct feedback to the global process.

OHCHRMay 2015: The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) released a briefing note on integrating human rights into the post-2015 development agenda, with a focus on accountability. Follow-up and review of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the global level is recommended to take place under the High-Level Political Forum on sustainable development (HLPF) at least every five years, and to be harmonized with the Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process.

At the national level, the note recommends follow-up and review at least every two years. At the regional level, it suggests that countries be supported to provide direct feedback to the global process.

Finally, the note recommends ensuring that all those involved in implementing the SDGs, including private sector financiers, act in accordance with international human rights standards, and that they face redress where obligations are not met.

The briefing note is one in a series of advisory documents released by OHCHR in May 2015 on ‘Key Messages on Post-2015 and Human Rights.’ Other documents address the principle of universality in the post-2015 development agenda, and comment on the draft outcome of the Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD 3) convening in July 2015.
