OECD Report Focuses on ICT-related Skills for A Greener Economy

The OECD report provides an outlook on ICT-related skills and competences needed in a greener and smarter economy.

The report also discusses, among other issues, the impact of green ICTs on employment and skills, as well as skills and competencies required for new ICT-related jobs.

OECD19 April 2012: The Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has issued a report analyzing developments in information and communication technology (ICT)-related skills and employment, with a focus on the potential of “green ICTs” for job creation in the post-crisis era. The report is titled “Skills and Employment: New Competencies and Jobs for a Greener and Smarter Economy,” referring to an economic model promoted by, among others, the OECD Green Growth Strategy. The report discusses: the post-crisis state of ICT-related employment; the impact of green ICTs on employment and skills, and the development of a working definition for “green ICT-related employment” and the identification of emerging green ICT- related jobs, based on cases and examples; the skills and competences required for new ICT-related jobs, and to what extent existing skills sets are sufficient; labor market transformation induced by the increasing deployment of ICTs and ICT-intensive technologies including green technologies; the need for acquiring needed skills namely through education, training (off shore) outsourcing and migration; and OECD government policies and programmes promoting ICT-related skills and jobs, particularly green ICT-related skills and jobs.
