27 January 2012: The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is building electrically interconnected laboratories as part of its Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF), which promotes renewable energy and smart grid technologies.

The endeavor will allow researchers to test new technologies on real and simulated power systems to better understand how they will affect larger grids. The project will provide high resolution data output and safety information, with the aim of facilitating integration and reducing market risks. The facility is scheduled for completion by the end of 2012. [NREL Press release]
