NRDC Urges World Leaders to Commit to Concrete Actions at Rio+20
story highlights

In the May 2012 issue of its “Reflections on the Race to Rio” newsletter, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) underlines the impossibility of negotiating or implementing a single business plan for the entire planet, and calls for “crowdsourcing” sustainability.

14 May 2012: The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) blog has published the May issue of its “Reflections on the Race to Rio” newsletter, highlighting that leadership is needed for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) to be a success, and calling on world leaders to attend Rio+20 with commitments to concrete actions.

The newsletter underlines that, although Rio+20 can be a success, it is impossible to negotiate or implement a single business plan for the entire planet. It therefore calls for “crowdsourcing” sustainability, which would involve creating new platforms to encourage and facilitate governments and stakeholders to take on specific, measurable commitments to contribute to globally negotiated goals.

The newsletter also contains links to external articles on: political will and urgency for action; the green economy; and innovative approaches to sustainable development, such as a Rio+20 Facebook Video Game. [Publication: Reflections on the Race to Rio, May 2012]
