Own the EdgeFebruary 2012: The NGO Major Group Organising Partners for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) have launched a newsletter titled “Own the Edge.” The latest issue, published in February 2012, highlights the report of the UN Secretary-General’s High-level Panel on Global Sustainability (GSP), as well as an Oxfam report on a new model of prosperity, titled “A Safe and Just Space for Humanity: Can we live within the doughnut?”

The newsletter seeks to provide news on the Rio+20 process. It was launched in December 2011, and will be published monthly until Rio+20 in June 2012. It contains news and events on Rio+20 from the Major Group Organising Partners, the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and NGOs, and also highlights opportunities for engagement.

The February 2012 newsletter includes an article by the Forest Stewardship Council, which notes that although there is a need to stop deforestation and improve the Earth’s forest ecosystems in order to promote green and inclusive economies, 1.6 billion people depend on forests and the resources they provide. It therefore advocates that at Rio+20, governments should pledge their support for “transparent, effective, balanced multi-stakeholder governed sustainable forest certification, in all parts of the world, especially in tropical and sub-tropical areas.” [Publication: Own the Edge]
