The Big Data for Development Network is led by LIRENasia, the Local Development Research Institute, the African Institute for Mathematical Science, the Center of Internet and Society, and the Centro de Pensamiento Estratégico Internacional (CEPEI).

The initiative's first newsletter emphasizes the importance of big data in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly in the global south.

February 2019: The Big Data for Development Network (BD4D) highlights current uses and applications of big data for sustainable development, emphasizing its importance for implementation of the 2030 Agenda in the global south in particular. As outlined in the first edition of its newsletter, the BD4D initiative aims to develop research on big data for development, and generate capacities among researchers in support of the SDGs.

BD4D argues that the information provided through big data can help countries overcome information gaps, expand official statistical operations and generate evidence-based policies. For example, the articles note, big data can help predict optimum climatic conditions for crops, reducing the risk of economic losses for farmers. The use of big data also can identify critical areas of crime or vehicular congestion, providing key information to help policymakers structure policies to address such challenges.

Five entities lead the BD4D: LIRENasia; the Local Development Research Institute; the African Institute for Mathematical Science; the Center of Internet and Society; and the Centro de Pensamiento Estratégico Internacional (CEPEI). Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) provides financial support. [BD4D Newsletter] [BD4D Website]
