5 November 2010: The Pacific Islands Oceanic Fisheries Management Project (OFMP), which is funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), has released a video on Pacific Islands’ work to manage sustainably the world’s largest tuna fishery.

The video, titled “Oceanic Guardians,” documents initial successes of individuals and of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) in helping to curb illegal fishing and sustainably manage the region’s fisheries. The video highlights the fining of a fishing vessel in 2008 for illegal activities, the introduction of compliance monitoring observers on ships, measures to limit by-catch and the closing of specific fishing waters.
