New UNECE Executive Secretary Appointed

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Sven Alkalaj, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

UNECE areas of focus include: environmental policy; climate change; transboundary water; implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); and the green economy.

9 March 2012: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Sven Alkalaj (Bosnia and Herzegovina) as Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

Executive Secretary Alkalaj previously held the position of Foreign Minister and Ambassador to the US and in Brussels. With experience working on regional cooperation among the Balkans and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Executive Secretary Alkalaj will aim to build consensus among States and stakeholders on the UNECE agenda.
