New UN Deputy Secretary-General Selected

As announced by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Jan Eliasson of Sweden, a veteran in the fields of diplomacy and foreign relations, has been appointed as UN Deputy Secretary-General, taking over from Asha-Rose Migiro of Tanzania.

Eliasson has served as President of the 60th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), as Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Darfur, and as the first Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs.

2 March 2012: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has announced that Jan Eliasson (Sweden), a veteran in the fields of diplomacy and foreign relations, has been appointed UN Deputy Secretary-General, and will take over from Asha-Rose Migiro (Tanzania) effective 1 July 2012.

Eliasson served as President of the 60th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Darfur, and the first Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs. He is currently a member of the Secretary-General’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Advocate Group. At the national level, Eliasson has served as State Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Minister of Sweden, as well as ambassador in New York and Washington, US.
