2 April 2015: The International Partnership on Mitigation and Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) has announced that as a result of its third regional workshop with the ‘Cluster Francophone,’ 24 participants from 19 French-speaking developing countries have developed ideas for improving their greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories and institutional arrangements based on the real-world examples presented.

During the workshop, which was prompted by requests at the last workshop for a peer-to-peer exchange on GHG inventories, particularly in the energy/transport and agriculture/forestry sectors, participants from Benin, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Tunisia and France analyzed inventories voluntarily furnished by Burundi, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The International Partnership reports that during open discussions, all participants sought solutions for the challenges a particular country was facing. The workshop was an opportunity for francophone countries to hear the good practices and experiences of their peers.

In addition, 13 representatives from four developed countries, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) offered recommendations. FAO and IEA presented a variety of guidance documents, tools and databases useful to maintaining GHG inventories.

Participants suggested, as follow-up activities, a webinar and an additional workshop on preparing intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs). The workshop was held from 31 March – 2 April 2015, in Paris, France, with the support of the Ministries of Environment of Belgium and France.
