Morocco to be 161st Party to Biosafety Protocol
story highlights

Morocco has deposited its instrument of ratification of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and will become the Protocol's 161st Party on 24 July 2011.

29 April 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has announced that Morocco has deposited its instrument of ratification of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety on 25 April 2011. It will thus become the 161st Party to the Protocol on 24 July 2011.

The Communication notes that the ratification comes at an important point in time for the implementation of the Biosafety Protocol, as many countries are currently preparing to sign and ratify the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress, which was adopted in October 2010 in Nagoya, Japan.

It further states that Morocco’s ratification brings the number of States that have not yet ratified or acceded to the Biosafety Protocol to 35, and expresses hope that more ratifications will follow to achieve the objective of the Biosafety Protocol’s Strategic Plan of having all CBD Parties ratify the Biosafety Protocol.
