monusco13 October 2014: During a visit to the Garamba National Park, the head of the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) called for increased national and international efforts to preserve the Park’s wildlife. Despite intensified anti-poaching efforts, more than 60 elephants have been killed in the park since April 2014.

Martin Kobler, the head of the Mission, said, “Armed group activity in eastern DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo) is largely funded by the proceeds from illegal trade and trafficking of the country’s rich natural resources.” He noted the large contribution of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) to such activity in the country.
