Mexico City Receives 2013 Sustainable Transport Award

The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) has chosen Mexico City as the winner of the 2013 Sustainable Transport Award.

The city is being awarded for its sustainable transportation initiatives in 2012, which include expanding the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, piloting an on-street parking reform program, expanding a public bike system, and revitalizing the public spaces Alameda Central and Plaza Tlaxcoaque.

21 January 2013: The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) has chosen Mexico City as the winner of the 2013 Sustainable Transport Award. The city is being awarded for its sustainable transportation initiatives in 2012, which include expanding the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, piloting an on-street parking reform program, expanding a public bike system, and revitalizing the public spaces Alameda Central and Plaza Tlaxcoaque.

The award winner and finalists are chosen by an international Steering Committee comprising: EMBARQ, The World Resources Institute (WRI) Center for Sustainable Transport; the German Development Agency (GIZ); Clean Air Asia; Clean Air Institute; the UN Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD); Transport Research Laboratory; EcoMobility, ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability; ITDP; and Transport Research Board’s Transportation in the Developing Countries Committee (ABE90).

In addition to Mexico City, the following additional cities will receive an honorable mention at the Sustainable Transport Awards: Berman, Germany; Lviv, Ukraine; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and Rosario, Argentina. [SLoCaT Press Release]
