Itto16 October 2015: The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) has released a catalog of medicinal plants compiled by women in the municipality of Jamapa, Mexico, containing traditional knowledge with regard to the medicinal uses of 44 plants found in the rural areas of the state of Veracruz.

The catalog is an output of an ITTO project aiming to assess and value the goods and services of tropical and coastal forests on the coastal plains of Veracruz, such as flood containment, carbon sequestration and improved water quality. The document contains both scientific and traditional information, including: scientific and common names, usable plant parts; diseases and conditions that can be treated; instructions to prepare remedies; where the plant can be found; and photographs or illustrations.

The document was compiled by a local women’s group and originally published by the Instituto de Ecología, Xalapa, Veracruz, with the aim of sharing traditional knowledge on non-timber forest products (NTPFs).
