A meeting on the role of business in meeting the 2010 biodiversity target has focused attention on companies that have a direct impact of biodiversity.

The meeting on Business and the 2010 Biodiversity Challenge, which was held in London, UK, from 20-21 January 2005, was organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), British and Brazilian governments, and various other organizations. The meeting aimed to develop ideas for engaging business in biodiversity issues in order to support the 2010 target to reduce significantly the current rate of biodiversity loss. Participants engaged in a brainstorming session that focused primarily on companies with a direct impact on biodiversity and those that impact biodiversity through their supply chains. Discussions were structured under the following topics: business and its relationship to biodiversity; promotion of biodiversity within the business community; leveraging or developing of biodiversity standards, guidance and other tools; promotion and scaling-up of biodiversity tools and initiatives; the business commitment to biodiversity; private sector engagement in the CBD at the national and intergovernmental levels; and future meetings and discussions.
