“Making It Happen” Highlights Emerging Challenge of Urbanization

This issue of the newsletter notes that the upcoming Second Intersessional Meeting will focus on the compilation document, to be introduced to participants on the first day by Conference Secretary-General Sha Zukang, as well as the structure and format of the outcome document.

It also announces a stakeholder training immediately preceding the Intersessional, to build Major Groups' capacity to engage in the Rio+20 process.

RIO+2030 November 2011: The latest issue of the newsletter from the Secretariat of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), “Rio+20: Making It Happen,” focuses on emerging challenges related to urbanization and sustainable cities.

According to the newsletter, experts are considering a set of sustainable development goals (SDGs) for cities, and a recent publication by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), titled “Shanghai Manual: Towards Sustainable Urban Development in the 21st Century,” presents innovative solutions for sustainable urban development.

This issue also notes that the upcoming Second Intersessional Meeting for the UNCSD will focus on the compilation document, to be introduced to participants on the first day by Conference Secretary-General Sha Zukang, as well as the structure and format of the outcome document. The Intersessional will be preceded by a meeting of the UNCSD Bureau and joint meeting of the UNCSD Board and the board of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) regarding’s ECOSOC’s role in Rio+20.

Finally, the newsletter informs Major Groups of a workshop for trainers to build stakeholders’ capacity to engage with the Rio+20 process, supported by the European Commission. [Publication: Rio+20: Making it Happen, Vol. 2, Issue 22]
