The Low Emission Capacity Building Programme (LECBP) has hosted a webinar that introduced LECBP country teams and other practitioners to an approach developed by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) to prioritizing NAMAs, which has been tested and implemented in Trinidad and Tobago, Bangladesh, and Kenya.
11 February 2013: The Low Emission Capacity Building Programme (LECBP) has hosted a webinar that introduced LECBP country teams and other practitioners to an approach developed by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) to prioritizing nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs). The approach has been tested and implemented in Trinidad and Tobago, Bangladesh and Kenya.
A report and presentations from the webinar, held on 17 January 2013, have been made available online. Topics focused on the prioritization of NAMAs in the context of national development planning; through low-emission, climate-resilient development strategies; and with the participation of policy makers and other key stakeholders.
LECBP was launched in 2011, with support from Germany, Australia, the European Commission (EC) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP), in order to enhance the technical and institutional capacity of developing countries to pursue low-emission, climate resilient development that also advances social and economic development. It places special emphasis on the facilitation and coordination of the public and private sectors through UNDP’s global networks and development expertise.
The programme’s five objectives are to: develop national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory systems; identify and formulate NAMAs; prepare Low-Emission Development Strategies (LEDS); facilitate the design and adoption of mitigation action plans by select industries; and design systems for the measuring, reporting, and verification (MRV) of the proposed mitigation actions.
Twenty-five countries are participating in the programme: Argentina, Bhutan, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ecuador, Egypt, Ghana, Indonesia, Kenya, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, Moldova, Morocco, Peru, the Philippines, Tanzania, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, Viet Nam, and Zambia.
The programme is part of UNDP’s Green, Low-Emission Climate Resilient Development Strategy (Green LECRDS), which encourages a shift from sectoral to holistic approach for long-term climate management.
