26 November 2010: Held from 22-26 November 2010 in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina, the First Latin American (and Fourth of Argentina) Congress for the Conservation of Biodiversity included various presentations and workshops on scientific and practical aspects of biodiversity conservation in the region.

On the occasion, Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), drew attention to the new CBD Strategic Plan adopted in Nagoya during the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10), noting that taxonomy and taxonomic capacity are basic concerns for biodiversity conservation. He highlighted that, by bringing together a strong representation of the academic, political and applied biodiversity conservation communities from Latin America, the Congress was an ideal opportunity to share progress in biodiversity science and practice, as well as to plan the new commitments needed to strengthen regional action for biodiversity conservation.
