19 October 2011: The Organization of African Youth (OAYouth), in partnership with Youth Alive! Kenya, convened the Kenya Youth Strategy Meeting for Rio+20, ahead of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). The meeting concluded with, inter alia, a commitment by participants to advocate for the development and implementation of sustainable development policies towards a green economy.

The meeting took place from 13-14 October 2011, in Nairobi, Kenya. It aimed to provide a platform for Kenyan youth to actively and substantively participate in the preparatory process for the UNCSD and to identify strategies for tackling sustainable development challenges in the country.

Participants agreed on the urgent need for structural and infrastructural interventions in policy formulation, implementation and evaluation. They called on governments to recognize that current global environmental challenges, particularly climate change, impact their common future and well-being. The meeting concluded with youth committing to support: good governance and transformative leadership; education, information exchange, communication and awareness; sustainable agricultural practices to reduce hunger, starvation and enhance food security; development and implementation of sustainable development policies towards a green economy; investment in, and promotion of, eco-friendly entrepreneurship and job creation; sustainable green cities and villages; public engagement and participation through culture and volunteerism; and youth development and capacity building.
