Japan to Hold Third World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction

9 November 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has announced that the Government of Japan will host two meetings related to disasters, including an international conference to share lessons from the Great East Japan Earthquake in late 2013, and the Third World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in 2012.

According to UN/ISDR, the Japanese offer was made during the debate on the latest report of the Secretary-General on Implementation of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (A/66/301) to the Second Committee (Economic and Financial) of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

The Third World Conference on Disaster Reduction is expected to develop a successor agreement to the international blueprint on DRR, the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015. Addressing the Second Committee, Margareta Wahlström, Assistant Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, underscored the need for a future framework on DRR to be anchored in the principles of sustainable development, incorporating disaster and climate risk management.
