19 April 2010: Yukio Hatoyama, Prime Minister of Japan, and Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia, held a summit meeting in Tokyo, Japan, on 19 April 2010, to discuss cooperation for environment and energy.
In their joint declaration on “Enhanced Partnership for a New Frontier,” the two leaders affirm the importance of a bottom-up, comprehensive, multi-sectoral approach in addressing global issues such as sustainable development and climate change, which focuses on the protection and empowerment of individuals and communities. Recognizing the need for a fair, equitable and legally binding agreement in addressing climate change, the two leaders confirmed that both sides would cooperate for the success of the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP16). They also agreed to strengthen cooperation for sustainable forest management, and the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
The two leaders also announced the “Japan-Malaysia Cooperation Initiative for Environment and Energy,” which covers: environmental preservation; chemicals management; waste; biodiversity; energy conservation; renewables; and standards and conformity assessment. The Initiative includes reference to holding seminars and assisting project implementation based on a co-benefits approach to concurrently address air pollution, water contamination, waste and climate change.
