IUFRO Reports on the Future of Forests

The International Union for Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) issued the September 2013 edition of its newsletter highlighting risks to forests including, climate change, air pollution and invasive alien species.

Iufro30 September 2013: The September 2013 edition of the newsletter of the International Union for Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) highlights risks to forests, including climate change, air pollution and invasive alien species.

In particular, the newsletter reports on the activities of the IUFRO Task Force on Resources for the Future with regard to the future of forests in the framework of globalization, plantations, bioproducts and advanced building systems and forest ecosystem services. The Task Force is, according to the report, conducting its work with the aim of supporting the target to achieve zero net deforestation by 2020.

The newsletter also summarizes a set of workshops on forests, air pollution and climate change held in Brazil and Switzerland. The workshops discussed the direct and indirect impacts of climate change on forests including forest health, genetic changes, tree physiology and community diversity.

Other meetings reported on include the first meeting of the IUFRO Working Party on Risk Analysis, and the upcoming IUFRO World Congress 2014, to be held from 5-11 October 2014, in Salt Lake City, US. [Publication: IUFRO News Volume 42, Issue 9] [IUFRO World Congress Website]
