IUCN11 September 2013: In an effort to enhance the governance of the world’s protected areas, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and partners have released a publication, titled ‘Governance of Protected Areas: From understanding to action,’ which presents guidelines for various types of protected area governance arrangements.

The guide defines four forms of protected area governance including state-run protected areas; locally run areas established and managed by indigenous peoples, local communities, nonprofit trusts and other non-state actors; privately run areas; and a number of shared governance arrangements. The two parts of the publication address concepts and principles around protected area management, and practical guidance for countries.

This edition of ‘Best Practice Protected Area Guidelines Series No.20′ was produced by IUCN, the Indigenous Peoples’ and Community Conserved Territories and Areas (ICCA) Consortium, the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (via GIZ) and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
