IUCN13 June 2016: At the conclusion of the project, titled ‘Promoting the value of key biodiversity areas in North Africa through the involvement of civil society organizations in their conservation and management,’ the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) published experiences from five Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) located in the Maghreb countries of Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia.

Implemented between 2014 and 2015 with funding by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF), the project conducted a situation analysis of the economic value of ecosystem services in the selected KBAs, namely Ifrane and Toubkal in Morocco, the Djurdjura National Park in Algeria, and the Ichkeul and Sebkha Sidi Mansour National Parks in Tunisia. It also carried out knowledge-building activities and the capacity development of KBA managers from the five sites with the aim of reinforcing the biodiversity hotspots approach and contributing towards a regional strategy for the conservation and management of these sites.
