story highlights

The latest newsletter from the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Global Protected Area (GPA) Programme highlights a workshop in Africa that defined a road map for the future role of protected areas in improving mammals decline, and an EU-funded environmental education initiative in Azerbaijan.

November 2011: This month’s issue of the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Global Protected Area (GPA) Programme News features articles on an IUCN workshop on protected areas held in Africa and the “Young Foresters” tree-planting initiative in Azerbaijan.

The newsletter highlights a workshop organized by IUCN’s Protected Areas Programme for Central and West Africa (PAPACO), in which participants discussed a finding that the populations of large African mammals have declined by 59 percent on average, and defined a road map for the future role of protected areas in improving the situation. A report of the workshop will be available in December 2011.

The newsletter also features an initiative in Azerbaijan aimed at creating school-based teams of “Young Foresters” to prevent deforestation through environmental education. The initiative is implemented through a EU-funded, European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI)-Forest Law Enforcement and Governance Program.
