ITTO and Japan Support Sustainable Timber Markets in Africa

The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and the Government of Japan have announced a US$1.4 million investment in support of sustainable timber supply chains within Africa.

Itto2 March 2015: The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and the Government of Japan have announced a US$1.4 million investment in support of sustainable timber supply chains within Africa.

The project to be funded, titled ‘Development of Intra-Africa Trade and Further Processing in Tropical Timber and Timber Products,’ aims to address obstacles to the expansion of sustainable timber trade, including value added processing in pilot countries: Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo.

Activities will include the facilitation of trade agreements, the elaboration of national strategies and business development plans, and the production and dissemination of market information. The project will also provide technical training for enterprises and technical assistance for national associations and organizations.

The project will also contribute to the achievement of the ITTO Accra Action Plan for the Development of Intra-African Trade in Tropical Timber and Timber Products.
