Itto2 July 2015: The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have signed an agreement extending their collaboration on the conservation of tropical forest resources, capacity building and knowledge sharing between ITTO and JICA and interested countries.

The agreement is an extension of an earlier agreement signed by ITTO and JICA in 2010, and aims to facilitate the implementation of joint activities for the conservation and sustainable use of tropical forest resources within the context of ITTO Action Plans, Biennial Work Programmes and Thematic Programmes, and JICA’s programme of work on nature conservation.

A number of potential areas of cooperation have been identified, including: joint project development and financing at sub-regional and regional levels; mutual coordination in project implementation to maximize effectiveness; joint activities in information dissemination and experience sharing on the sustainable management of tropical forests; opportunities for the dissemination of Japanese technology and know-how; and the promotion of markets and market-based approaches.
