April 2012: The Multilateral System (MLS) of access and benefit-sharing (ABS) of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) received 351 new wheat accessions that were evaluated during a project implemented in Morocco and funded by the Treaty’s Benefit-sharing Fund.

This is the first time that the MLS has received material generated by a project of the Benefit-sharing Fund. The project helped in the evaluation of selected accessions held at Morocco’s National Agriculture Research Institute, and the collection and evaluation of new landraces through a participatory process involving both researchers and farmers.

The 195 durum wheat and 156 bread wheat accessions can now be shared through the standard Material Transfer Agreement. [ITPGR Press Release]
