IRENA Calls for Proposals for Renewable Energy Projects under the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development

The call for project summaries, which closes on 12 January 2013, covers the first of seven funding cycles from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), and includes projects for all types of renewable energy, which are government-led or government-guaranteed, and which enhance energy access or improve the uptake of renewable energy technologies in developing countries.

IRENA26 November 2012: The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has announced a call for project summaries for concessional loans to facilitate renewable energy projects in developing countries as part of the first of seven funding cycles from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD).

Proposed projects are expected to focus on innovative and replicable approaches to enhancing energy access and renewable energy technology uptake in developing countries. Eligible projects need to be led or guaranteed by governments, and can involve all types of renewable energy sources. Other funding conditions include that: loans will range from US$5 million to US$15 million per project; projects are expected to attract additional financial support; and eligible countries are either members of IRENA, signatories of the IRENA Statute, or States in Accession, and must appear on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) “Development Assistance Committee (DAC) List of Official Development Assistance (ODA) Recipients.”

The submission deadline for project summaries is 12 January 2013, after which IRENA will invite full length proposals in March 2013. Full project proposals will be accepted until the end of May 2013 and IRENA will announce the final selection of projects by December 2013. [IRENA Press Release]
