26 April 2009: The 30th session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was held from 21-23 April 2009, in Antalya, Turkey, with approximately 320 participants in attendance. The Panel focused mainly on the scoping process for the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) with a view to providing guidance to climate change experts who will define the outline of the report during the scoping meeting scheduled to take place July 2009.

For this purpose, the Panel adopted a number of proposals, particularly on the early scoping of the Synthesis Report and improving the treatment of regional issues. Delegates also addressed the need to enhance participation by developing country scientists in the assessment and reinforce the IPCC Secretariat. They also agreed to hold a number of expert meetings on topics such as human settlements and the detection and attribution of anthropogenic climate change.
In addition, the Panel decided to proceed with the preparation of a Special Report on managing the risks of extreme events and disasters. Other issues included the revised rules of procedure for the election of the IPCC Bureau and the Task Force Bureau, work on new scenarios and the IPCC Peace Prize Scholarship Fund. Most of the meeting outcomes will serve as guidance for the AR5 scoping meeting, while others will be taken up at the next session of the IPCC, to be held from 26-28 October 2009, in Bali, Indonesia.
