May 2008: The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has published a new study on how climate change impacts migratory processes, in particular the livelihoods of the poor and the most vulnerable.
The findings support a non-linear relationship and identify other factors such as affordability to move away from certain areas and preferences that might influence the linkages between migration and climate change. The study further identifies: the key elements of natural and human-induced climate change of potential relevance to migration; the current state of the debate about the relationship between climate change and migration; and approaches that advance the understanding of climate change-related migration. The study was prepared for the IOM by Dominic Kniveton, Kerstin Schmidt-Verkerk, Christopher Smith and Richard Black from Sussex University, UK.
