The International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV held a technical workshop in Costa Rica to help that country formulate Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) in the agriculture, transport and waste sectors, as part of the process of realizing Costa Rica's goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2021.
18 October 2012: The International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV (Measuring, Reporting and Verification) held its fourth technical workshop in Costa Rica to help that country realize its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2021.
The “Capacity Building to Develop Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) in Costa Rica” workshop, held from 16-18 October 2012, in the Costa Rican capital of San José, was attended by over 20 experts from the ministries of environment, agriculture, health, and public works and transport, the National Coffee Institute (INC), the National Agricultural University (UNA), and representatives of the private sector, as well as non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the agriculture, transport and waste sectors.
The first two days of the workshop walked participants through the ten steps of a training tool on NAMAs developed by German International Cooperation’s (GIZ) Competence Centre for Climate Change in which participants simulate the process of converting their ideas into NAMA design in sectors identified as having the greatest mitigation potential in Costa Rica, namely agriculture, transport and waste.
On the third day participants, assisted by experts, developed roadmaps for NAMAs in each sector that outline the responsibilities of each party to put the NAMA into practice, including next steps for the related MRV plan.
The workshop was co-sponsored by Costa Rica’s Environment Ministry (MINAET) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), a specialized agency of the Organization of American States (OAS), with support from the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE).
The International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV was launched within the framework of the Petersberg Climate Dialogue in May 2010 in Bonn, Germany, by South Africa, South Korea and Germany.
