10 September 2013: The Government of Indonesia announced the establishment of a national REDD+ agency as part of its climate change partnership with the Government of Norway. The REDD+ Managing Agency will report directly to the President and will manage the reduction of emissions from both forests and peatlands.

The agency is also tasked with providing benefits with regards to the maintenance of ecosystem services, the conservation of biodiversity, and improved livelihoods for indigenous peoples and local communities. In order to achieve its objectives the agency will develop a national REDD+ strategy and a national safeguards framework, coordinate REDD+ financing, and mainstream REDD+ policies.

The agency will also be responsible for monitoring and reporting on REDD+ programmes, ensuring compliance and supporting participation in international processes.
