India, one of Asia’s fastest growing economies, is among the largest consumers of wood products and a large part of its population continues to depend on land, putting pressure on forests. India has instituted a tree planting system to combat land degradation and desertification, including windbreaks and shelterbelts to protect agricultural land. [UNEP Press Release]
