ILO24 August 2016: The International Labour Organization (ILO) has launched a youth-focused version of its 2016 report on global employment trends and prospects. The report, titled ‘World Employment and Social Outlook 2016 – Trends for Youth,’ finds that after several years of employment growth, youth unemployment is again on the rise.

The ILO publication provides statistics on global and regional youth unemployment, including working poverty rates, “decent work” opportunities, gender inequalities and migrant trends. The report states that, in 2016, there are almost 200 million people unemployed around the world. In a video summary of the report, the ILO notes: an increase in youth unemployment after several years of employment growth from 2012-2015, with 13.1% of youth experiencing unemployment in 2016, and many workers in emerging economies experiencing deterioration in their employment conditions.

A press release by the UN Regional Information Centre in Europe (UNRIC) notes that impacts of the global financial crisis of 2008 persist, affecting both the number and quality of jobs available. UNRIC highlights the need for implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG 8), on inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for men and women by 2030.

ILO Director-General Guy Ryder identified two factors affecting work: the slowdown in emerging economies, and the decline in commodity prices. He called for urgent action to create decent work opportunities and avoid increasing social tensions.
