27 October 2010: The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Government of Brazil have announced the launch of a three-year programme to enhance the capacity of countries to respond to social and natural disasters.

The joint programme aims to build capacity in humanitarian assistance, the prevention of natural and social disasters, and post-crisis recovery. The first beneficiaries of the programme will be Haiti, Niger, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Timor-Leste, and Portuguese-speaking African Countries. A total of 276 government officials initially will be trained in capacity-building and other issues.

The new programme, which will be implemented by the ILO Turin Centre, recognizes the importance of protecting potentially affected populations and promoting sustainable development. [ILO Press Release]
