ILC12 January 2016: The International Land Coalition (ILC) has set out its strategic framework for 2016-2021, which aims to shift the Coalition’s focus from land reform advocacy to implementation.

The strategic framework is accompanied by a road map, endorsed by the ILC Council in December 2015, which describes how ILC members will accomplish the three strategic objectives of “connecting, mobilizing and influencing.”

With a current membership base of more than 200 member organizations working in over 64 countries, the ILC aims to establish national engagement strategies to enhance its impact on systematic change. The strategic framework sets out 10 commitments to guide joint actions at the national level by ILC members with a view to realizing people‐centered land governance. The commitments include promoting: secure tenure rights; strong small-scale farming systems; diverse tenure systems; equal land rights for women; secure territorial rights for indigenous peoples; locally managed ecosystems; inclusive decision making; transparent and accessible information; effective action against land grabbing; and protection for land rights defenders.

Established at the 1995 Conference on Hunger and Poverty in Brussels, Belgium, the ILC’s focus has evolved from awareness raising and mobilizing against hunger to promoting land rights, influencing policy and catalyzing joint action by civil society organizations.
