IfpriDecember 2013: In an effort to understand the role of secure land rights in achieving food security and improved nutrition, the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) has completed a study evaluating the impacts of India’s land-allocation and registration program in West Bengal.

The data collected by IFPRI tracks short- and long-term food security indicators. The results indicate that program beneficiaries that attained stronger land security were more likely to take loans for agricultural purposes, invest in agricultural improvements and involve women in decision making. The research found that effects vary with plot size, with larger farmers achieving greater impacts. IFPRI is a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
