The Intergovernmental Forum on Chemical Safety (IFCS) VI is convening from 15-19 September 2008, in Dakar, Senegal, under the theme “Global Partnership in Chemical Safety Contributing to the 2020 Goal.” During the meeting, delegates will consider the future of IFCS, including the following options: modifying the IFCS as a distinct institutional arrangement that avoids duplication with similar bodies, enhances synergies and saves costs; integrating the IFCS into the International Committee on Chemicals Management (ICCM) by designating part of each ICCM meeting as a session of the Forum; or integrating the IFCS into ICCM, by making IFCS an ICCM subsidiary body.

In addition to the institutional considerations, Forum VI has a full substantive agenda, including: an exchange of information on nanotechnology and manufactured nanomaterials to help raise awareness about the potential new opportunities, challenges and risks posed by nanotechnology; substitution and alternatives for harmful substances and processes with less harmful ones or with non-chemical alternatives; and integrated pest management and key elements of pesticide risk reduction strategies.
