5 August 2010: On a recent visit to Guatemala, Kanayo Nwanze, President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), called attention to regional needs and approaches to fund green programmes to assist in climate change adaptation.
On the tour, Josefina Stubbs, the Director of IFAD’s Latin America and the Caribbean Division, highlighted work with the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) to fund new systems for sustainable forestry and carbon sequestration in Mexico. She also described the Rural Development for Las Verapaces (PRODEVER) project in Guatemala, which is co-funded by IFAD. Stubbs explained that the project has strengthened soil conservation practices and included the distribution of energy efficient stoves and the planting of 50 hectares of fast-growing forests that will be used specifically as fuel. She also noted that every investment includes training components to help beneficiaries learn about conservation of water resources and reforestation. [IFAD Press Release]
