The "Rural Poverty Report 2011: New realities, new challenges: new opportunities for tomorrow's generation" highlights advances taking place in Africa related to economic growth, agricultural investment and new partnerships for improved production.
3 May 2011: The Rural Poverty Report 2011, the flagship report of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) that is subtitled “New realities, new challenges: new opportunities for tomorrow’s generation,” was presented for the first time in Africa at a high-level event in Cape Town, South Africa, on 3 May 2011, prior to the World Economic Forum’s Africa meeting.
The report highlights advances taking place in Africa related to economic growth, agricultural investment and new partnerships for improved production. It also calls for: investment in rural infrastructure and services; capacity building to manage risks, including those posed by climate change; a focus on productive, sustainable and resilient agriculture, addressing young people; and support for collective organizations.
During the event, Kanayo Nwanze, IFAD President, stressed that the impacts of climate change are already being felt in agriculture, leading to higher food prices and food insecurity. He stressed the need to pursue activities aimed at addressing rural poverty from within countries by addressing policies and investment, and increasing support from the international community.
