IFAD Highlights Forest Restoration in Nepal
story highlights

The Leasehold Forestry and Livestock programme in Nepal facilitates leases of degraded public land to local people, including women, in order to support poverty reduction, the restoration of forests and the promotion of livestock.

18 December 2012: The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) reviewed its Leasehold Forestry and Livestock Programme in Nepal. The programme establishes leases between the Government of Nepal and rural men and women with the aim of reducing poverty and promoting the restoration of degraded public land.

The programme operates in 22 districts involving about 6,000 farmers’ groups in the restoration and sustainable management of 28,400 hectares. It also provides access to rural finance and marketing and technical assistance for the breeding of small livestock.

Through the engagement and training of local people, especially women, for the delivery of programme services, the programme has generated significant social benefits. [IFAD: Press Article]
