IEA Expert Discusses the State of Play After Cancun
story highlights

IEA expert Richard Baron highlights the importance of the Green Climate Fund and welcomes the UNFCCC decision to include Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).

10 January 2011: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has published IEA expert Richard Baron’s assessment of the recent UN Climate Change Conference in Cancun, Mexico.

In the article, Baron highlights the importance of the Green Climate Fund, which seeks to assist developing countries in their mitigation and adaption efforts. He also welcomes the UNFCCC decision to include Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), something the IEA has long argued for, and which will enable developed countries to offset their carbon emissions through the support of CCS projects in developing countries. Baron also writes that concrete emissions targets and the future of the Kyoto Protocol will be the main points of contention in the coming year, before the next session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC, which is scheduled to take place in Durban, South Africa.
