December 2012: The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) has published a report on trade and development, highlighting a fair and stable global trading system as an enabler of inclusive development. The paper is part of IDS’ efforts to ensure that the development of a new post-2015 framework is based on sound evidence, and designed and implemented in an inclusive way.

Among other publications on this topic, in June 2012, IDS published an edition of the InFocus Policy Briefing highlighting global debates about what might replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) after their 2015 deadline. It notes that philanthropic foundations and businesses should be integrated into these discussions by encouraging cooperation on individual MDGs and transferring project ownership and management to private actors. The April 2012 edition highlights the role of human security principles in a post-2015 development framework that would express the values of freedom, dignity, equality, solidarity, tolerance and respect. The Briefing notes that a human security framework can help identify priorities within a human-centered development approach, in a more locally flexible and relevant way.

IDS notes that it will be working with global partners to produce new research and convene policy debates to address some of the fundamental questions surrounding the creation of a post 2015 development framework, including what can be learnt from the creation and implementation of the original Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). IDS is working through its STEPS Centre (Social, Technological and Environmental Pathways to Sustainability) to align the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and post-2015 framework process, among other initiatives at the Institute.
