20 March 2010: On the sidelines of its annual meeting, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) held a seminar in Cancun, Mexico, on “The Route to Mexico: Challenges and Opportunities for a Global Agreement.”
Seminar participants included: José Mario Molina-Pasquel Henríquez, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry; Rajendra K. Pachauri, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Chair; Mary Robinson, Former President of Ireland; Eduardo Braga, Amazon State Governor, Brazil; Juan Rafael Elvira Quesada, Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources of Mexico; and Yvo de Boer, UNFCCC Executive Secretary.
The seminar featured panel presentations and online participation, and was moderated by Thomas Lovejoy, chief biodiversity advisor to the President of the World Bank. Participants discussed, inter alia: the inclusion of social and economic goals within climate change mitigation and adaptation; examples of action to stop deforestation through supporting livelihoods in the Amazon State; and opportunities for achieving an agreement on a post-2012 framework during the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC, to be held in Cancun, Mexico, in November-December this year.
