IDB29 August 2012: The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved a US$76 million loan to support the construction of Bii Nee Stipa II, a 74-megawatt (MW) wind farm in Oaxaca, Mexico. The project is situated in a region with winds throughout the year, and will diversify Mexico’s installed electricity generation capacity, which at present is 75% derived from fossil fuels.

The wind farm is the fourth to be financed by the IDB in Oaxaca since 2009, and is part of Mexico’s effort to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 50% by 2020.

The Oaxaca state expects to reach around 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of wind-based installed capacity. The Bii Nee Stipa II has an expected annual net generation of 278 GW-hours and is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 172,265 metric tons per year. [IDB News Release]
