IDB11 May 2012: The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and SAAB, a Swedish defense and security company, have agreed to work together on an initiative to support sustainable development in cities in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Stockholm, Sweden, on 11 May 2012.

The IDB initiated the Sustainable Cities platform in 2011 to support sustainable development in cities with fast growing populations. The initiative seeks to develop long-term environmental, fiscal and urban management strategies and to account for the various negative impacts of climate change. The new cooperation brings together the IDB platform with SAAB’s “attractive cities” project, under which the company’s technology is applied to supporting sustainable urban environments.

The collaboration may include assigning a SAAB specialist to the IDB’s Sustainable Cities team for a year. [IDB Press Release]
